Student projects

This page shows a list of project proposals for students at University West. Most of the projects can be performed in group as part of a course you are taking (confirm with the course responsible) and/or as a thesis project on the study programme you are taking (“examensarbete”). In fact it is not uncommon to engage in a project you are interested in as part of a course project first, and then continue working on it as part of your BSc/MSc thesis.

Note: The list of project ideas is continuously updated. Some proposals might be outdated and some are not yet up here but in the works. If you see something interesting, please email the contact person and you will get the current status of that project and also potentially similar ones that are on the horizon.

  • Newest proposals are shown on top. Oldest and those already taken in the end.
  • If you are interested in a project already “taken”, don’t hesitate to get in touch with the contact person: sometimes a similar project can be arranged.
  • Some proposals are described in English language, some in Swedish. The language to be used in the (thesis) report writing is decided together with the supervisor.

Aim/Goal/Research question

In this project, the goal is to use remote-sensed data to monitor the forests and lakes of Sweden. The student would develop a software (based on cloud or local machine) where given a set of dates and coordinates, the SAR and multi-spectral data can be downloaded.  In addition to this, the student should analyse historical data to monitor the change of forest and/or lakes in Sweden in a particular region. The student would be expected to try various change monitoring methods.  Bonus: Do some basic image processing on them (e.g. 2003.13502.pdf (arxiv.org))

Aim/Goal/Research question

Design an ML algorithm with log-scale preprocessing as an embedded part. Determine its relative merits and demerits. Design it to become as much autonomous as possible so that it performs the log-scale pre-processing with minimal effect on the ML algorithm.  (Optional) Work on finding analytical limits/bounds on the loss of performance for the ML algorithms.

Aim/Goal/Research question

A software suite that can analyse IR images to identify individual humans/animals in it and, then, find temperatures of the individuals.  (Optional) The student can work on an Android tool to do the above in real time.

Aim/Goal/Research question

In collaboration with production technicians and operators at Sansera, the aim is to re-design apps within the MaintMaster system for sustainable and trustful inspection of failures caused by machine-, systems and human errors in daily operations of production work.

Aim/Goal/Research question

Prototype and investigate how the use of high-end mixed reality equipment (Varjo XR-3 and/or Meta Quest Pro) can be used to improve and further develop teaching applications for Welding and Metallurgy in VR/AR/MR. This includes developments of the current application to take full advantage of the features of the Varjo XR-3 and/or Meta Quest Pro, including high-resolution assets in VR and variations of the application for AR/MR.

Aim/Goal/Research question

Prototype and investigate how the addition of animated or pre-recorded virtual agents can be used to improve guidance of students. This includes investigations of how teachers (as creators of teaching material) can create and set up such agents either by recording their actions or otherwise configuring their behavior, as well as how this is best integrated into the current VR application.

Aim/Goal/Research question

Prototype and investigate how the addition of multiuser and a teacher co-present in VR can facilitate better teaching, e.g., by enabling more dynamic and adaptive interactions. In addition to development of the core multiuser functionality a key research question is to investigate which controls the teacher should have access to in VR to be efficient in such a situation, and how such controls should be designed to work well and give the teacher a sense of control and good access to features for guiding students.

Aim/Goal/Research question

The aim of this work is to simulate AR subtle visual guidance on a VR platform. The platform is a state-of-the-art head-mounted VR headset with embedded eye tracker (probably Varjo VR-1, XR-3, Aero or HTC Vive Pro with eye tracking add-on).

Aim/Goal/Research question

To develop a software prototype that alters the way observers scan text documents on a laptop display by introducing barely visible visual elements. The basic idea is to draw attention away from discrimination-prone components and towards objectively relevant components of job applications. Ethical (including privacy, security) aspects of deploying this kind of systems is an important theoretical part of this thesis project.
